Bunion (Hallux Valgus)

Expert Diagnosis & Treatment at The Foot and Ankle Center

What is a bunion?

A bunion is a common foot condition in which the big toe gradually shifts toward the second toe, causing a bony bump to form at the base of the big toe joint. Over time, this misalignment can lead to pain, inflammation, difficulty wearing shoes, and progressive deformity.

At The Foot and Ankle Center, we specialize in both conservative and advanced surgical treatments for bunions so you can return to comfortable, pain-free movement.

What Are the Symptoms of a Bunion?

Common signs and symptoms include:

  • A visible bump at the base of the big toe

  • Pain or tenderness along the inside of the foot

  • Redness, swelling, or irritation around the joint

  • Stiffness or reduced range of motion in the big toe

  • Difficulty wearing shoes

  • Calluses or corns where the toes overlap

Bunions often worsen gradually, making early diagnosis important.

What Causes Bunions?

Bunions can develop from a combination of factors, including:

  • Inherited foot structure (most common)

  • Flat feet or abnormal walking patterns

  • Tight, narrow, or high-heeled shoes

  • Arthritis or joint inflammation

  • Previous foot injuries

Genetics play the biggest role - if bunions run in your family, you may be more likely to develope them.

How Are Bunions Diagnosed?

  • Our podiatrist performs a thorough clinical evaluation that may include:

  • Physical examination of the foot

  • Assessment of gait and foot structure

  • X-rays to determine deformity severity

This helps us create a treatment plan tailored to your condition.

Treatment Options

Conservative (Nonsurgical) Treatments

Many patients find relief without surgery. Options include:

  • Custom orthotics

  • Wider, supportive footwear

  • Padding or toe spacers

  • Anti-inflammatory medication

  • Ice therapy

  • Activity modification

  • Steroid injections (when appropriate)

These treatments help reduce pain and prevent the bunion from worsening.

Surgical Treatment

If conservative care does not relieve pain—or if the bunion is severe—surgery may be recommended.

Bunion surgery aims to:

  • Correct the bone alignment

  • Restore joint function

  • Reduce pain and deformity

Dr. Sunil Jeganathan, MD, DPM will discuss the best approach based on your anatomy and lifestyle.
